This Week's Big Picture

If you have been sitting on Asia Miles, Cathay Pacific points, or transferable currency waiting for the right moment - this week might be it. We are seeing a serious wave of Cathay Pacific award availability across multiple cabins and routes, and the off-peak pricing makes this genuinely exciting.

We have 18 flight deals across economy, premium economy, and business class this edition - almost all centred around the Hong Kong hub. Whether you are departing from North America, Europe, or already based in Asia, there is something here worth booking.

Plus the hotel section this week is stacked. A Hyatt redemption hitting 5.4 cents per point is the kind of value that makes you do a double-take. More on that below.

Miles and Points Trivia

Let's kick things off with a quick question tied to this week's deals. Here we go:

Cathay Pacific is the headline airline in today's newsletter. Which frequent flyer program do you use to book Cathay Pacific award flights at the best value?

  • A) Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

  • B) Asia Miles (Cathay's own program)

  • C) American Airlines AAdvantage

  • D) British Airways Executive Club (Avios)

The answer is revealed at the bottom of today's newsletter - keep scrolling!

Deal of the Week

Frankfurt to Hong Kong - Business Class for 100,000 Points

Frankfurt (FRA) to Hong Kong (HKG) on Cathay Pacific - Business Class

Just 100,000 points one-way at off-peak pricing (vs. 140,000 at peak). This is the headline deal this week.

Available: May 26

Availability level: Low - move fast on this one.

Why it's special: Cathay Pacific business class between Europe and Asia is genuinely one of the best products in the sky - fully flat beds, exceptional service, and that famous Hong Kong landing. At 100,000 off-peak points, you're saving 40,000 points compared to peak pricing. The cash equivalent on this route runs well over $3,000 one-way, putting the value comfortably above 3 cents per point.

Here's where it gets even better. Citi ThankYou Rewards is currently offering a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (expires April 18), and Virgin Atlantic miles can be used to book Cathay Pacific business class. That bonus means you could effectively cover a comparable redemption with fewer base points than you think. Move on this before April 18 if you are using Citi points.

How to book: Search via the Asia Miles website or explore partner redemption options through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Check current Cathay availability at awardtravelfinder.com

Economy Deals: Departing from North America

Big availability this week for anyone looking to get to Asia from the US or Canada. These are all Cathay Pacific off-peak rates via the Hong Kong hub.

  • ✈️ Los Angeles to Hong Kong - Economy - 40,000 points - May 9-13 - Medium availability

  • ✈️ San Francisco to Hong Kong - Economy - 40,000 points - May 9-13 - Medium availability

  • ✈️ Vancouver to Hong Kong - Economy - 40,000 points - May 8, 10-13 - High availability

40,000 points transpacific economy is solid off-peak value. Vancouver has the strongest availability right now with seats across five dates. LA and SFO are slightly tighter but still bookable.

Tip: Chase Ultimate Rewards is currently offering a 20% transfer bonus to Air Canada Aeroplan (expires April 30), and Aeroplan can be a useful routing option for transpacific itineraries. Worth running the numbers.

Economy Deals: Departing from Europe

Cathay has opened up a healthy stretch of availability between Europe and Hong Kong for May. These are all off-peak rates.

  • ✈️ London to Hong Kong - Economy - 45,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

  • ✈️ Frankfurt to Hong Kong - Economy - 45,000 points - May 8-13 - High availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to London - Economy - 45,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to Paris - Economy - 45,000 points - May 10-12, 14, 19 - Medium availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to Frankfurt - Economy - 45,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

London and Frankfurt departures both have high availability across consecutive dates in early May - perfect if you have flexibility. Paris is medium but has a nice spread including a mid-May date on the 19th.

UK readers - Smart With Points has a great breakdown this week on the best UK cards for earning Star Alliance miles, which pairs nicely with some of these European routes. Worth a read before you transfer.

Economy Deals: Departing from Asia-Pacific

For readers already based in Hong Kong or transiting through the region, there is strong availability heading outbound to North America in May.

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to New York - Economy - 40,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to Los Angeles - Economy - 40,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to San Francisco - Economy - 40,000 points - May 8-12 - High availability

  • ✈️ Hong Kong to Vancouver - Economy - 40,000 points - May 8, 10-13 - High availability

40,000 points from Hong Kong to the US West Coast is the sweet spot here. All four routes show high availability across the same early May window, which is unusual and great for groups or couples traveling together.

Not interested in using points on economy? Sometimes cash beats points - Friday Flight Deals regularly surfaces cheap cash fares on transpacific routes that can undercut even good award redemptions.

Featured Hotel Redemptions

A quick preview of two standout hotel redemptions from this week's full list. The complete breakdown - all 12 properties across Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Hyatt - is in the premium section below.

Grand Hyatt Baha Mar - Nassau, Bahamas

~29,000 World of Hyatt points per night - 5.4 cents per point value

This is the headline hotel deal of the week. At 5.4cpp, you are extracting serious value from your Hyatt points. The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar sits inside one of the Caribbean's most impressive resort complexes - massive pools, casino, and beach access. For under 30k points a night, this is exceptional.

Hyatt Place Kyoto - Kyoto, Japan

~9,500 World of Hyatt points per night - 5.0 cents per point value

If you have been eyeing a Japan trip - and with this week's Hong Kong availability, getting there is very doable - Kyoto at 9,500 points per night is almost too good to be true. Under 10k points for a centrally located Kyoto hotel is a genuine sweet spot.
